Pioneering Food Packing in Churches

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

On Friday 9th February 2018, Feed The Hungry UK in partnership with ‘Life Rice’, held a church-based food and clothes packing event at Christ Church, East Greenwich.

This pioneering event vent was hosted by the Rt Revd Dr Karowei Dorgu, Bishop of Woolwich and was the first time that food packing in this way had been held in a church in the UK.

The food packing was surrounded with prayer, worship and fellowship, as 75 volunteers gave 3 hours for one evening, packing 10,000 meals for children in Burkina Faso. At the same time, clothes which had been donated were sorted and packed into boxes, ready to be sent to Romania.

“It’s a real privilege”, said Rev. Margaret Cave, the Team Rector of Christ Church East Greenwich. “When Bishop Karowei asked me, I said ‘yes’ straight away – I knew that this would be something that would really fire the imaginations of the people in the congregations in this Parish. It’s been fantastic.”

The event on the Friday evening was closely followed by a second church-based event at St Barnabas Church Dulwich, on the morning of Saturday 10th February.

These two events are set to become annual parts of the church’s calendars.
