Who we are

“Don’t let my church in the third world die of hunger before I return.”

This challenge from God motivated Dr Lester Sumrall to set up Feed The Hungry in 1987. Since then, over £300 million in food and supplies have been delivered to hungry, hurting people in 92 nations around the globe.

Feed The Hungry UK carries on this call to provide for the needs of hungry, lost communities. Established in 2005, three goals motivate and sustain all our projects:

We feed those who are hungry.

We empower the church worldwide to reach local communities in need.

We share the hope that comes through Jesus Christ.

Feeding the hungry worldwide

When Feed The Hungry first visited the isolated Nakwanya in rural Uganda, it was a forgotten town. It had only three buildings surrounded by simple mud huts, with a few chickens and goats wandering around. It was also a place where families struggled to make ends meet. The children were malnourished, in threadbare clothes and without access to education.

In November 2021, Feed The Hungry sent a container with 300,000 fortified rice meals to Nakwanya. From that moment, the tide began to turn for these people.

A church was planted. A school opened. A medical clinic is on its way. And villagers are receiving aid to start businesses.

Not only that, but the Gospel is changing lives. The Church, which started with 50 people under a tree, is now 1400 worshippers meeting in a new building.

It started with a container of food, but grew to be so much more: hope was restored to a struggling community and the love of Christ is growing among them. Praise God!

As a charity motivated by Jesus’ invitation to a full life, we follow his call. We seek to fulfill the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people in crisis. These crises can be rooted in long-term poverty, created by global events such as Covid or caused by environmental disasters and war.

Through financial and prayer support from people like you, we deliver food, supplies and biblical teaching using a pastor-to-pastor, church-to-church strategy.

Our Every Child, Every Day projects provide food to over 500,000 children in 7 countries.

Our UK projects meet the needs of families in the Midlands facing food poverty, supporting over 1000 people every week.

Our Emergency Disaster Relief projects pop up with food and emergency supplies whenever a vulnerable community suffers a natural or manmade disaster.

How does Feed The Hungry use donations?

It’s important to us that we are transparent and faithful with the money and resources given to us, so that you can be confident it gets to the people who need it most. This means we operate in a particular way:

Support us as we serve people in need across the world. A regular gift from someone like you can make a world of difference to a hungry child in need.
