In the NOUR:SH Kitchen, two negatives become an amazing positive! Increasing food poverty in the Midlands sits in shocking contrast to excessive food waste. The creative projects run by NOUR:SH Kitchen exploit this excess food by turning it into nutritious meals for hundreds of people struggling to make ends meet.

NOUR:SH is generously supported by NutriCalc.

Key Stats

Worldwide, over one third of all food produced is wasted

In the UK, 9.5 million tonnes are wasted every year

8.4 million people are in food poverty in the UK

Statistics from The World Counts, ONS UK and Local Government Association.

Simple idea, big impact

Close to end of life or excess vegetables become nourishing soup, frozen into portions. Excess fruit is chopped into fruit pots and frozen, ready to be turned into refreshing smoothies. Distributed through Community Pantries, people struggling to afford fruit and vegetables have access to nutritious, delicious food.

The Nour:sh kitchen is able to make the most of unwanted food, using it to tackle food poverty across the Midlands. Food donations come from businesses, the food industry and local allotment organisations.

Less waste food, more nutrition for families.

Fyffes deliver us some of their excess fruit. Some get sent to our Pantries, and some get chopped and put into fruit smoothies. They’re then frozen and distributed to Community Pantries for families on the breadline to enjoy.

Sib’s gift

Sibyl, known as Sib to all her friends, was a passionate cook. She became a Christian as a teenager, and served in the local church all her life.

Her daughter says, “Mum was extremely organised when it came to food preparation. So much so that Dad could come home for his evening meal at any time from the DIY/timber/woodyard and she could give him his cooked evening meal (meat and 2 plus veg and a pudding with custard) within 15 mins!”

A group of people stand in front of a Sibs Kitchen sign at the launche event. Two women are wearing Sibs Kitchen aprons. Everyone is smiling.

After Sib and her husband passed away, the family felt that funding the NOUR:SH Kitchen was an apt way to remember Sib. The legacy funding they gave enabled us to build and equip the kitchen.

The future of NOUR:SH Kitchen

NOUR:SH Kitchen is developing rapidly as a project, not only to make better use of food that would otherwise be wasted, but also to add value beyond food. The Kitchen works hand in hand with other Feed The Hungry UK projects and outside organisations to maximise the difference we make.

  • The Kitchen provides a place for people supported by Pathfinder. Clients can gain new skills in budgeting, making healthier choices, cooking from scratch and using food better.
  • Our Sow to Grow garden is cultivated by volunteers connected with our UK projects. The fruit and vegetables they grow are added to Coventry Foodbank parcels, sent to our Pantries or used in the Kitchen.
  • We’re developing a relationship with a catering training school, hoping to offer work placements for trainees.

NOUR:SH Kitchen is a key part of tackling food poverty in the UK. Your gift can help us further our work to reduce food waste and get affordable, nutritious food – and new skills – to the people who need it most.
