Facing Starvation in Karamoja

Earlier this year, many of you responded to our appeal to send food to families on the brink of starvation in Turkana, northern Kenya. Your generosity sent 11 tonnes of maize – 55,000 meals – to people who had almost nothing left, and we are deeply grateful for your support.

But the crisis has not stayed within Kenya’s borders.

The same failed rains, the same collapsing harvests, the same desperate hunger – has now spread across into the Karamoja region of northern Uganda. Right now, almost half of all people in Karamoja are facing a food crisis. Crops have not grown. Cattle are dying. And it is children – always the most vulnerable – who are bearing the greatest cost.

Karamoja is one of Uganda’s most remote and marginalised regions. It is a place where communities have long depended on cattle and seasonal rains to survive. When both fail together, there is simply nothing to fall back on. Families are going days without food. Parents are watching their children go hungry and feel powerless to help.

Feed The Hungry East Africa, led by Bishop Solomon Mwesige from Kampala, is on the ground and ready to respond – but they need resources to act.

Gavin Kibble, CEO of Feed The Hungry UK, said, “This is a truly heart-wrenching situation. To have children with distended stomachs, facing starvation because there is no food in their villages is simply wrong. Please give what you can to help these communities, and show them that they are not forgotten.”

Just £15 can feed a family of five for a whole month in Karamoja. £45 feeds three families. £90 feeds six. These are not large sums – but in Karamoja right now, they are the difference between surviving and not.

Feed The Hungry doesn’t simply drop food and disappear. We work through trusted local church partners who are embedded in these communities – people who know the families by name, who will sit with them, pray with them, and journey with them from survival towards something better. But right now, survival has to come first.

If you have already given in response to our recent appeal, thank you – your generosity is already making a difference. If you haven’t yet had the chance, or would like to give again, please consider responding today.

Every gift, however large or small, carries with it a message that these families in Karamoja are seen, known, and not alone.

Please give to support families facing starvation in Karamoja, Uganda.
